3 Tips to Prevent Tooth Decay

Are you struggling with tooth decay? Almost everyone has a hard time keeping their teeth in good shape 100% of the time, but with the right steps, it is possible. The main way to prevent tooth decay is by focusing on good oral hygiene and a healthy diet, both of which are relatively easy to achieve. Keep reading to find out more.

Keeping tooth decay away

Outlined below are three ways to prevent tooth decay. This information is worth reviewing, especially for those who struggle with oral health.

1. Brush after every meal or twice a day

The number-one way to prevent tooth decay is to brush at least twice a day, if not after every meal. It is advised to brush daily with a soft-bristled toothbrush, though if tooth decay is of concern, it is advised to use a medium-bristled one a few times a week. Regardless of the type of toothbrush, it is crucial to follow a strict brushing schedule to ensure that bacteria does not get left behind. Another tip is to use a toothpaste that contains fluoride. Fluoride keeps the teeth strong and mineralized.

2. Never skip flossing

In order to prevent tooth decay, it is necessary to floss once a day. Flossing removes any build-up in between teeth, which happens to be where many cavities form.

That said, over-flossing can result in irritation. Flossing once or twice a day is ideal because it clears the spaces in between teeth without irritating the gums.

3. Avoid sugary and acidic foods and beverages

While brushing and flossing are ideal for preventing tooth decay, it is also necessary to avoid the overconsumption of certain things, such as sugary or acidic foods and beverages. Outlined below are a few examples of things that can cause tooth decay:

  • Candies
  • Soda
  • Citrus fruits
  • Cookies
  • Alcohol

While it is not necessary to completely cut out these items, it is advised to consume them in moderation. Additionally, it is a good idea to brush immediately afterward, if possible. This ensures that the sugar and acids do not stick to the teeth for too long, thus preventing tooth decay from occurring.
